Chiefs Eye Double Triumph In Senior And Reserve

Kaizer Chiefs’ senior and reserve teams are poised for a potentially triumphant end to the season, offering a chance for double silverware.

This prospect, unimaginable at the season’s outset after nearly a decade of underwhelming performances, has ignited renewed hope among supporters.

Nasreddine Nabi’s senior squad secured a place in the Nedbank Cup final by overcoming Mamelodi Sundowns 2-1 at Loftus Stadium on Sunday. They are now set to face Orlando Pirates in the final at Moses Mabhida Stadium on 10 May.

Simultaneously, the Kaizer Chiefs reserve team reclaimed the top spot in the DStv Diski Challenge with a 1-0 victory over TS Galaxy at Sugar Ray Xulu Stadium earlier that Sunday.

Substitute Manqoba Ozoemena’s 74th-minute strike secured the crucial three points, propelling Chiefs back to the summit, previously held by Stellenbosch.

Vela Khumalo’s side, with a game in hand over second-placed Stellenbosch, who are the defending champions and have 58 points after 24 matches, have only suffered two defeats this season. The equation is straightforward: Chiefs must win their remaining four matches to clinch their first DStv Diski Challenge title.

Stand-in coach Dillon Sheppard emphasized the vital importance of securing the three points to regain the top position. “It was very important three points,” said Sheppard.

“The players were really pumped up for this one. We know the permutations and how close Stellenbosch is after they won on Saturday [against Golden Arrows].

“I’m happy with the three points but we will go back to fix the performance because we lost control, gave away the ball too easily.

“You know these boys are still developing, and we have to help them to get to the higher level. So, good three points, but I really wanted a better performance from the boy.”

Sheppard, a former standout left-footed player for Sundowns and Cape Town Spurs, acknowledged their subpar performance but stressed the importance of securing wins, regardless of style, drawing on his extensive playing experience.

Chiefs’ remaining fixtures include home matches against Richards Bay and Magesi [Chippa United under the PSL DC], followed by an away game against AmaZulu. Notably, Chiefs remain unbeaten against all three opponents this season.

“The effort that the boys are putting in, we have to come out and win football matches,” said Sheppard.

“Sometimes you must grind, sometimes it can take a little bit extra. But also, as coaches, we always reflect to the performance of the players – both individually because we promote players individually and too as a team.

“We must be better. And it is two home games now, which is Bay and Magesi.

“Hopefully, going back to Jozi we can put in a better performance.”
