Riveiro On What Makes Him Believe They Can Win Treble

Orlando Pirates coach Jose Riveiro says the Buccaneers have everything in their hands to win treble this season and will fight until the end of the season to achieve their objectives.
The Buccaneers beat Marumo Gallants 1-0 at Orlando Stadium on Sunday to book themselves to the final of the Nedbank Cup for the third time in a row.
Pirates have already won the MTN8 Cup this season and have a chance to add more trophies as they are still in the race to win the Nedbank Cup, the Betway Premiership, and the CAF Champions League.
Speaking after the Pirates’ victory against Bahlabane Ba Ntwa on Sunday, Riveiro said being unbeaten in the Champions League made them believe they could win everything this season.
“The fact that players managed to succeed in different scenarios this season, and also in various contexts, gives you something that no amount of money can buy in the sport: confidence,” Riveiro said.
“I think that confidence now is increasing amongst ourselves within the group. Today, I will never say it was a risk game because you have to run, and we were confident in what we were doing even though we were tired.
“I think all those experiences of which we are accumulating together in different scenarios demanding a lot. I’m giving a team extra confidence this season, and obviously, we are a team that we are because we are working for it.”
Pirates will now face Kaizer Chiefs in the final at the Moses Mabhida Stadium on 10 May. It is expected that the tickets will be sold out as soon as they go on sale.
“We would be not happy to go to extra time today because we played very well under those difficulties and challenges that were in the game,” continued Riveiro, whose side last time went to the extra time in a cup game was against SuperSport United in the quarterfinal of the MTN8 Cup last year.
“In the MTN 8 against SuperSport, we went to extra-time, and that’s always a risk because these types of games are going to be tough when you will go on penalties.
“Today [on Sunday], in one mistake, the game could have ended 1-1 because it’s a small advantage with a set piece.
“But our intention was not to go there because it’s going to be a disadvantage for us, but luckily we managed to win the match in 90 minutes to save our energy and everything.”
This is Riveiro’s last season with the Buccaneers, and they have won five major trophies since joining the club in 2022.
