Chiefs Gunning For Top Eight Finish After Nedbank Cup Glory

Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper Brandon Petersen says Amakhosi won’t be winding down for the remainder of the season as they have set their sights on securing a top eight spot after ending a decade-long trophy drought over the weekend.

The Glamour Boys clinched the Nedbank Cup for a record 14th time at the expense of arch rivals Orlando Pirates at the Moses Mabhida Stadium on Saturday – a result that saw them lift their first piece of major silverware in 10 years.

Now, Chiefs will switch their focus to the Betway Premiership, where they are under massive pressure to stage a respectable campaign to avoid missing out on a top-eight finish for two consecutive seasons after registering a worst-ever finish in PSL history in 10th place last season.

The Naturena-based outfit is currently in ninth place, tied on 30 points with eighth-placed Chippa United after 26 league outings with two games remaining. Chiefs will tackle Limpopo outfits Sekhukhune United and Polokwane City respectively before wrapping up their season.

With the business end of the 2024/25 campaign fast approaching, the Chiefs shot-stopper believes the last few league matches will be like cup finals for them as they look to finish on a strong note to stand a chance of competing for more trophies in the upcoming term.

“I think we have two cup finals left. We want to end the season on a high, we want to finish in the top eight so that we have more trophies, more silverware to play for next season,” said Petersen, who joined the Soweto giants in July 2021.

“So, we will celebrate for now, and then it’s back to work for those two cup finals, and hopefully they will come home.”

Nasreddine Nabi’s men will travel to the North to face continental football chasers, Babina Noko, at Peter Mokaba Stadium on Saturday. Chiefs’ last victory away to Sekhukhune dates back to May 2022 through a solitary goal from Ramahlwe Mphahlele.
