Durban City Tighten Grip On Top Spot

Motsepe Foundation Championship log leaders Durban City powered themselves to another win after claiming a slender 1-0 victory over relegation-threatened Venda FC thanks to a solitary goal from Joslin Kamatuka at Chatsworth Stadium on Friday.

The Namibian international scored in back-to-back games to help the Durban-based club extend their lead to five points at the top of the standings after 18 matches played. Simo Dladla’s troops have accumulated 37 points thus far.

Following a two-game run without a win, Orbit College ascended to second place with a 2-1 win over Milford FC at Princess Magogo Stadium. The ambitious Rustenburg side has collected 32 points as they continue to target a top-flight spot for next season.

On the other hand, JDR Stars’ promotion aspirations took a further blow after playing to a goalless draw against newly promoted Highbury. JDR has only registered one win in their last five league outing and dropped down to third place.

In-form forward Muzomuhle Khanyi, who’s reportedly under the radar of Orlando Pirates and Stellenbosch FC, scored a brace to help Hungry Lions to a 2-0 victory over bottom-placed Leruma United. The 25-year-old goal-poacher has netted 14 goals in 17 second-tier matches.

In Dobsonville, Upington City claimed maximum points during their visit to Pretoria Callies, who hosted the match away from the capital city. The 2-1 victory saw Brandon Truter claim his first victory in charge of the club which also saw ‘Bafana Ba Gucci’ snap an 11-game winless streak.

Meanwhile, rookies Kruger United consolidated their survival chances after holding fifth-placed Casric Stars to a 1-1 draw in the Mpumalanga derby at Kanyamazane Stadium on Saturday. However, the former is winless in their last three outings while the latter is unbeaten in as many games.

Furthermore, Cape Town Spurs’ issues deepened after they were subjected to a 3-0 defeat by Black Leopards in Thohoyandou. This kept them in 15th place with 15 points—two above bottom-of-the-table Leruma and level with 14th-placed Venda FC, which had an inferior goal difference.
