Esperance Vows Improvement for CAF Champions League Clash Against Sundowns
ES Esperance coach Miguel Cardoso has issued a warning to Mamelodi Sundowns, stating his team will be a different challenge when they host the first leg of their CAF Champions League encounter this weekend.
Esperance, currently leading the Tunisian Ligue 1 table just like Sundowns who dominate the PSL, were held to a disappointing 1-1 draw by Monastir. Despite Rodri Rodrigues scoring for Esperance, they couldn’t hold onto the lead.
This match between the top two Tunisian teams ended Esperance’s winning streak in the league. However, Cardoso, the Portuguese coach appointed in January, remains confident. He acknowledges the team’s shortcomings against Monastir but assures these mistakes will be addressed before facing Sundowns, who are also undefeated in the South African league.
“We will analyze our mistakes as part of our preparation for this crucial game,” Cardoso said. “The coaching staff is already working diligently, and we will be fully prepared come match day.”
The 51-year-old, with experience managing Celta Vigo, Rio Ave, AEK Athens, and Nantes, concluded with a motivational message for his players.
“I firmly believe we have the potential to achieve great things,” he declared. “We must maintain focus, stay united, and give our all in every game. If we achieve this, we will be a formidable force.”
Meanwhile, Sundowns are departing on Tuesday to prepare for the upcoming clash. They saw two goals wiped off by Moroka Swallows in the DStv Premiership match on Monday.
The first leg will be played at Stade Olympique Hammadi Agrebi (Radès) in Tunis on Saturday (21:00 SAST). This marks the third meeting between these two teams in the Champions League.
