European Breakthrough: Pirates Reserves Head To Netherlands For Winners Tour

Orlando Pirates Reserves have embarked on a historic nine-day European Winners Tour in the Netherlands running from 14-23 August.

Fresh off securing their maiden DStv Diski Challenge (DDC) title with a decisive 2-0 victory over Mamelodi Sundowns, the young Buccaneers will test their mettle against top Dutch academies, including SBV Vitesse Arnhem, De Graafschap, and Sparta Rotterdam.

The tour offers the reigning South African reserve champions exposure to prestigious European youth setups, distinct tactical philosophies, and live Eredivisie fixtures.

What is the fixture schedule for Orlando Pirates’ Dutch tour?

The Buccaneers kick off their match schedule on 18 August against SBV Vitesse Arnhem at the Papendal training complex. Founded in 1892, Vitesse’s world-class academy developed international stars like Roy Makaay and Arsenal captain Martin Ødegaard.

On 20 August, Pirates travel to Doetinchem to face De Graafschap at the Bezelhorst training complex. De Graafschap boasts one of the Netherlands’ elite youth setups, with their U21 side entering the clash as current KNVB Dutch U21 Cup holders.

The tour concludes on 22 August in Rotterdam with a high-profile mini-tournament at the Robey Academy. The Buccaneers will play two matches, taking on Sparta Rotterdam and Japanese powerhouse Yamanashi Gakuin High School.

Sparta Rotterdam—founded in 1888 as the oldest professional club in the Netherlands—has produced legendary figures including Louis van Gaal, Danny Blind, Dick Advocaat, Winston Bogarde, and current Dutch star Denzel Dumfries.

How will the tour support Orlando Pirates’ player development?

Beyond competitive matches, the squad will gain first-hand exposure to Dutch football culture and matchday environments. The group is scheduled to watch two live top-flight Eredivisie fixtures:

  • August 16: Ajax Amsterdam at the Johan Cruijff Arena.
  • August 22: Sparta Rotterdam at the historic Sparta Stadion.

For the DDC champions, this European tour represents the next step in their development, testing the players against unfamiliar styles and systems known for producing elite global talent.
