Former Pirates Striker Finds New Home In Motsepe Foundation Championship

Former Orlando Pirates striker Ndumiso Mabena has found a new club in the Motsepe Foundation Championship, joining Leruma United.
The 37-year-old joins a Leruma side desperate for points under coach Musa Nyatama. Leruma United currently sits at the bottom of the table with 17 points after 20 matches. They have conceded a staggering 29 goals and scored only 11, having lost eleven games in the process.
Mabena, who had two stints with Orlando Pirates, had been without a club since leaving Polokwane City at the end of last season.
The Groblersdal-born forward featured in 16 matches across all competitions for Rise and Shine last season, scoring two goals.
The former Winners Park striker initially joined Pirates ahead of the 2009/10 season and remained at the club until 2014 before moving to Platinum Stars.
He was part of the Pirates side that won the league title twice during their double treble between 2010 and 2012, along with two Nedbank Cups, two MTN8 trophies, and a Carling Knockout Cup.
Upon his return to Pirates in the 2022/23 season, Mabena added another Nedbank Cup title to his collection, making it three triumphs in that competition.
He also spent four seasons with Bloemfontein Celtic and two seasons with Royal AM. His move to Royal AM followed club boss Shauwn Mkhize’s purchase of the financially struggling Bloemfontein Celtic’s status ahead of the 2021/22 season.
He captained the KwaZulu-Natal club as they finished a record third that season under coach John Maduka.
In total, Mabena has scored 62 goals and provided 37 assists in 328 top-flight appearances.
