Former Sundowns Star Enrolls In CAF C Course
Former Mamelodi Sundowns star Sibusiso Vilakazi is preparing for the next chapter of his career.
The 34-year-old midfielder has enrolled in the CAF C coaching course, signaling his intention to transition into coaching after his playing days are over.
Vilakazi was pictured to have enrolled for the CAF C course with the South Africa Football Association (SAFA) along with other former football, having been without a club after leaving TS Galaxy at the end of last season.
The 2013/14 PSL Footballer of the Season tried to resuscitate his professional career with SuperSport United during the off-season to be reunited with his former coach Gavin Hunt, but it wasn’t the case.
It is why the former Bafana Bafana attacking midfielder appears to be upskilling himself for life after his playing days are over by taking the CAF C course for future jobs in coaching.
Vilakazi, having worked with Hunt at Bidvest Wits, secured a big-money move to Sundowns in the 2016/17 season and enjoyed a trophy-laden period.
He won the league five times, the Nedbank Cup twice, the Carling Knockout trophy, and the MTN8.
He was part of the Sundowns squad that won the CAF Champions League in 2016, but unfortunately, CAF had already closed the registration window before his arrival before the group stages, preventing him from participating in the competition.
This was also the case for Thapelo Morena and Ricardo Nascimento, who joined Sundowns at the same time.
Despite missing out on the Champions League title, Vilakazi did contribute to Sundowns’ CAF Super Cup victory. He came on as a late substitute in the final against TP Mazembe from DR Congo.
Vilakazi left Sundowns to join TS Galaxy ahead of the 2022/23 season, but his time there was short-lived due to the high demands placed on him by coach Sead Ramovic.
Throughout his career, Vilakazi has featured in 366 matches in all competitions, scoring 67 goals along with 36 assists.
The 34-year-old also represented Bafana Bafana 34 times, scoring five goals in the process.
He was part of Stuart Baxter’s Bafana Bafana side that lost in the quarter-final of the Africa Cup of Nations to Nigeria in the 2019 edition in Egypt.
