Former Wits, SuperSport Defender Trying His Luck At Gallants
Former SuperSport United defender Siyabonga Nhlapo is attempting a career resurgence at Marumo Gallants.
Released by Chippa United at the end of last season after a single campaign, Nhlapo made 12 appearances for the Chilli Boys.
Prior to his stint at Chippa, Nhlapo spent seven years with SuperSport United. He will be hoping to impress new Marumo Gallants coach Dan Malesela, who replaced Dylan Kerr.
The 35-year-old began his professional career at Jomo Cosmos in 2011 before joining Bidvest Wits in 2013. He was part of Gavin Hunt’s Wits team that won the MTN8 in 2016/17 but missed out on their league title triumph after joining SuperSport midway through the season.
Nhlapo won two more MTN8 titles with SuperSport, in 2017/18 and 2019/20. He was also part of the SuperSport team that reached the CAF Confederation Cup final in 2017, losing to TP Mazembe.
On the international stage, Nhlapo represented Bafana Bafana at the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations, where South Africa exited the group stage after managing a single point in a tough group containing Senegal, Ghana, and Algeria.
