Goss Fires Back At Bafana Critics After World Cup Heartbreak
Bafana Bafana goalkeeper Ricardo Goss has defended head coach Hugo Broos and dismissed mounting external criticism following South Africa’s 2-0 Group A defeat to Mexico at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The 32-year-old shot-stopper is part of Hugo Broos’ squad competing at the global showpiece, which is being co-hosted by Mexico, Canada, and the United States. Although Goss did not feature during the qualification campaign, he played an important role within the national team setup as South Africa secured their place at football’s biggest event.
Goss was named on the bench for Bafana Bafana’s opening Group A encounter against Mexico last Thursday. South Africa suffered a disappointing 2-0 defeat in a match made even more difficult by red cards shown to experienced midfielder Themba Zwane and Siphephelo Sithole.
Despite the setback, Goss believes the opportunity to represent his country on the world stage remains a dream come true for every footballer.
“I think everyone is excited, and everyone was excited before the World Cup started,” he said as per Soccerbeat.
“And, as you say, I think it’s every footballer’s dream, no matter which country they come from, to represent their nation at the World Cup. For us, it’s the same.”
Reflecting on the defeat to Mexico, the veteran goalkeeper admitted the team had hoped for a better start but insisted there is still everything to play for in the remaining group matches.
“Look, the way we started was obviously not the way we planned, but I think we’ve still got two games to prove ourselves and try to make it out of the group,” he added.
“And it’s an exciting tournament for us. I think everyone this year is really excited, and we’re going to go again against Czechia.”
Bafana similarly lost their opening match 2-0 to Mali in January 2024 at the Africa Cup of Nations, but bounced back, hammered Namibia 4-0, and eventually claimed the bronze medal.
Bafana Bafana will now turn their attention to a crucial clash against Czechia on Thursday, with Zwane and Sithole suspended. However, the Europeans are also desperate for points after opening their campaign with a 2-1 defeat to South Korea.
South Africa will conclude their Group A fixtures against South Korea next Thursday, with the outcome likely to determine whether Broos’ men progress to the knockout stages or exit the tournament at the group stage.
