Jomo Cosmos Fighting Relegation In ABC Motsepe League

Former Premier Soccer League (PSL) team Jomo Cosmos is embroiled in a relegation scrap in the Gauteng ABC Motsepe League, courtesy of a prolonged period of winless runs spanning over three months.

In a bid to halt their downward spiral, Ezenkosi, as the club is fondly known, played out to a 1-1 draw against M Tigers [TUT] in their last league outing at TUT Pretoria Stadium to snap a six-game losing streak in the South African third tier.

Overall, the team spearheaded by revered Orlando Pirates legend Jomo Sono is enduring a disappointing spell of collapse, with 14 consecutive games without tasting a victory since a narrow 1- 0 win over the University of Johannesburg in January 2025.

As a result, Cosmos is languishing in 16th place with 29 points accumulated after 30 matches played in the 18-team championship.

Moreover, with five games left before the conclusion of the season, Cosmos trail runaway log leaders Highlands Park with a staggering 45 points. The ongoing term is their third season out of the professional ranks after a 15th-place finish in the 2021/22 second-tier campaign got them relegated.

Cosmos managed a third-place finish with 73 points in their first season in the Gauteng amateur league, seven points behind the league winners Dondol Stars. They registered a fourth-place berth last term, and 11 points shy of eventual back-to-back champions Dondol Stars.

It remains to be seen whether the team that was once a force to be reckoned with in the South African top flight can resurge, overcome their recent slump, and power themselves out of the cutthroat business of the third division.

Cosmos enjoyed significant success in the early 2000’s lifting the Coca-Cola Cup [now Carling Knockout Cup] in 2002/03 and 2005/06 seasons. Additionally, they won the SAA Top 8 (now MTN8) during the 2003/04 campaign and the league title in the form of NPSL in the 1986/87 campaign.
