Kaze: We Can’t Be Lost In Excitement

Kaizer Chiefs co-coach Cedric Kaze insists the team cannot afford to get swept up in excitement despite securing two consecutive wins and back-to-back clean sheets.

Chiefs, who had previously endured a four-match losing streak across all competitions, bounced back with a morale-boosting win over Durban City at FNB Stadium.

They followed that up with another solid performance, defeating bottom-placed Magesi 2-0 at Moses Mabhida Stadium on Sunday to climb to fourth place on the table with 36 points from 20 matches.

Youngster Mfundo Vilakazi was among the scorers in Durban, finding the net in the second half after Wandile Duba had opened the scoring before the break.

Kaze attributed the team’s improved performances to increased squad stability following a challenging spell marked by injuries and suspensions.

“I always believe that the difficult moments that we went through were conditioned by a lot of injuries, a lot of suspensions,” said Kaze after the game. 

“But when you have important players that come and play regularly, two, three, and four games in a row, it is that stability that we are looking for.  

“I would say we are technicians, we knew why we were in a difficult moment, and the good thing is that we stayed calm. 

“From now on, we need to stay calm and not get euphoric because we won two games; we need to work very hard to keep the momentum.”  

Chiefs were largely untroubled throughout the match in Durban, facing a Magesi side that has now gone 13 matches without a win in all competitions while also undergoing a coaching change.

Allan Freese, who replaced John Maduka, has overseen five matches so far, recording three draws and two defeats. Magesi’s last victory came in October against TS Galaxy.

“We are happy with the three points, two goals, and another clean sheet,” Kaze added.

“There are many positives. I also want to thank our supporters in Durban for their incredible energy.

“In the first half, we could have controlled the game better and scored more goals, but our final pass and finishing lacked a bit of precision.

“At 1-0, we didn’t panic. We kept our structure, stayed organised, and limited our opponents’ chances. It was a well-deserved three points.”

With momentum building, Amakhosi will now pause their league campaign due to the FIFA international break. They are set to return to action on 6 April with an away fixture against Orbit College FC in the North West.
