Key Duo Sidelined As Chiefs Suffer Major Double Injury Blow
Kaizer Chiefs have confirmed a double injury blow ahead of their weekend clash, with both Brandon Petersen and Wandile Duba set for spell on the sidelines.
Chiefs revealed that goalkeeper Petersen suffered a medial collateral ligament (MCL) injury in his left knee during Tuesday’s training session and will be out for four to six weeks. The experienced shot-stopper has started every match for Amakhosi since the season kicked off in August.
Meanwhile, young attacker Wandile Duba—who has already netted three goals this term—will miss approximately two weeks due to a hip and groin injury. The medical team will monitor his recovery over the coming week before determining when he can return.
As a result, both key players will miss Saturday’s trip to face Golden Arrows at Mbombela Stadium, the club’s final fixture before the upcoming FIFA international break.
“As Amakhosi prepare for their final fixture before the upcoming FIFA international break this weekend, the team has been dealt a double injury setback,” Chiefs said in a statement.
“Goalkeeper Brandon Petersen sustained a knee injury during training on Tuesday morning and will be sidelined for an estimated four to six weeks.
“The experienced shot-stopper, who has featured in every match since the season kicked off in August, injured the medial collateral ligament in his left knee and will now undergo rehabilitation.
“Adding to the concerns, attacker Wandile Duba has been ruled out for approximately two weeks after picking up a hip and groin injury.
“Duba, who has already netted three goals this season, has a minor defect in the affected area, and the medical team will monitor his progress closely over the coming week before determining the next course of action.
“Both players have played key roles in Kaizer Chiefs’ strong start to the campaign, and their absence will be felt.
“The club extends its best wishes to Petersen and Duba for a speedy recovery and looks forward to welcoming them back to action soon.”
The dual setback further thins out the squad, adding to the long-term loss of Langelihle Phili, who coach Fernando da Cruz confirmed last month would miss eight weeks.
Kaizer Chiefs currently sit fourth on the Betway Premiership table with 12 points from six matches.
