Lukhanyo Aims To Reclaim His Former Glory.

Springbok double World Cup winner, Lukhanyo Am, once considered one of the world’s premier centers, is eager to rediscover his peak form.

Injuries have hampered his performance for both the Sharks and the Springboks, allowing Jesse Kriel to secure a spot in the national team.

Am missed the Springboks’ successful Rugby World Cup title defense in France but was later recalled to the squad without seeing game time.

The 30-year-old center has been selected by coach Rassie Erasmus to start the second test match of the Rugby Championship against Australia in Perth on Saturday. Am acknowledges the challenges posed by injuries over the past two and a half seasons but expresses his gratitude for the opportunity to return to the squad.

“I’m delighted to be back in the squad,” Am said at a press conference on Wednesday morning. “Injuries have undoubtedly disrupted my rhythm, but they’re an unfortunate part of the game. I’m grateful for the opportunity to return and play at center in this match.”

Am played a pivotal role in the Springboks’ 2019 World Cup victory over England, setting up Makazole Mapimpi’s match-winning try. Both Am and Mapimpi have been reinstated to the starting lineup for the upcoming clash against Australia.

Am’s exceptional form in 2021 earned him a nomination for World Player of the Year. His no-look pass against the All Blacks that year went viral, showcasing his exceptional skills. Am believes his past achievements can inspire him to regain his top form.

“As I said, injuries have disturbed me, but I’m happy to have gotten the chance to play yet again and be fit and go back to the national squad,” added Am.

This will be Am’s second start for the Springboks this season and his first at center alongside Kriel at 13, who has occupied the position in his absence.
