Magesi Turn To Veteran Freese In Survival Bid

Veteran coach Allan Freese has been tasked with steering struggling Magesi away from relegation danger after being appointed for the remainder of the 2025/26 season.

Dikwena Tsa Meetse confirmed on Wednesday both the departure of head coach John Maduka and the arrival of the experienced Freese, signalling a decisive move as the club fights to retain its Betway Premiership status.

The change in the technical team comes at a critical stage of the campaign, with Magesi desperate to reverse a worrying run of form.

Maduka leaves the club after Magesi managed to collect just 11 points from 15 league matches this season, a return that has left them hovering in the lower reaches of the table and firmly in relegation trouble.

Despite earlier hopes of stability, results failed to improve, prompting management to act in a bid to salvage their top-flight future.

Freese brings a wealth of experience to the role, although he has not served as a head coach in recent seasons.

Freese’s most recent position was at Wydad Casablanca, where he worked from August 2024 until April 2025 as technical director under head coach Rulani Mokwena.

That role kept the 69-year-old mentor closely involved in high-level football operations, even if he was not on the touchline week in and week out.

The last time Freese held a head coaching post was during the 2022/23 season in the Motsepe Foundation Championship, where he was in charge of All Stars.

Now, he returns to the dugout with a clear and urgent mandate: to steady Magesi, improve results, and guide Dikwena Tsa Meetse away from the drop.
