Mailula: Mokwena Believes In Me

Bafana Bafana striker Cassius Mailula says he chose to join Wydad Casablanca because coach Rulani Mokwena has had a significant influence on his career.
Mailula joined Wydad on Wednesday on loan until the end of the season from MLS side Toronto FC.
The 23-year-old was given his debut in the 2022/23 season by coach Mokwena when he was in charge of Mamelodi Sundowns.
Mokwena left Sundowns in June in a surprising move, before Wydad came knocking for his signature.
Wydad has since inserted a clause to sign Mailula permanently, provided that he performs well for the side, at the end of the loan deal.
“I chose Wydad AC for several compelling reasons. First, I will be under the guidance of coach Rulani, who knows me well and has always believed in my abilities,” said Mailula.
“He played a pivotal role in my upcoming at Mamelodi Sundowns.”
Mailula will join a Wydad side that will feature in the FIFA Club World Cup in June next year alongside his former club Sundowns and Al Ahly as three clubs representing Africa at the global stage in the US.
However, Wydad had a disappointing season last term, finishing sixth in the Botola League in Morocco and missing out on the CAF Champions League next season.
“Wydad is a prestigious club, and when Coach Rulani shared his ambitions and his vision to make history with the team, I knew it was the right choice,” he said.
“Additionally, the opportunity to compete in the Club World Cup next year is a significant driver to the decision, as it aligns with my dream to play against the best players in the world.”
Mailula is the 13th player signed by Wydad ahead of next season, and Bongani Zungu and Percy Tau might also join him in Morocco.
