Makhanya: Mbokazi Has a Bright Future

Orlando Pirates DStv Diski Challenge coach Joseph Makhanya has expressed his satisfaction with Mbekezeli Mbokazi’s progress in the club’s first team.

The 19-year-old Mbokazi joined Pirates in 2023 from Langalibalele Sports Academy, following his impressive performances in the Champ of Champs Engen Knockout Challenge in Gauteng.

Initially playing for Pirates’ DDC team, Mbokazi was promoted to the senior squad in October 2024. However, he had to wait for his senior debut.

The South African U20 national team defender made his first-team debut last month away against Chippa United, delivering a standout performance alongside Nkosinathi Sibisi, who was named Man of the Match.

Since then, Mbokazi has secured increased playing time for the Buccaneers, earning two Man of the Match awards in the Nedbank Cup quarter-final win against SuperSport United and in their most recent league match against Mamelodi Sundowns before the international break.

Speaking to Sportswire, Makhanya conveyed his delight at Mbokazi’s senior team performances and expressed confidence in his future potential.

“The aim is to see them growing, so I’m happy for him [Mbokazi],” Makhanya said after their 2-1 loss against AmaZulu at VUT Isak Steyl Stadium on Saturday.

“We feel very happy when we see them growing because that shows the good work from the development. I’m happy for Mbokazi and hope will see more of him as time goes on.”

Mbokazi aims to make his CAF Champions League debut as the Buccaneers prepare to face Algerian side MC Alger in the quarter-final at Stade du 5 Juillet in Algeria on Tuesday evening. The young player from Hluhluwe, KwaZulu-Natal, has traveled with the Pirates squad for the match.
