Makhaula: I Love The Nedbank Cup
Orlando Pirates midfielder Makhehlene Makhaula has emphasized the special significance of winning the Nedbank Cup, calling it a competition close to his heart.
The former AmaZulu captain also praised his midfield partner, Thalente Mbatha.
Pirates are currently finalizing preparations for their much-anticipated Nedbank Cup clash against Mamelodi Sundowns at Mbombela Stadium this Saturday (3:00 PM).
Makhaula has been impressive in this year’s Nedbank Cup, scoring a crucial goal against his former team AmaZulu in their thrilling 6-goal quarter-final match.
“Personally, I can say I am always working hard at training and everything that I do, I do it with love and whatever the coach tells me to do, I do it,” Makhaula explained.
Having arrived at Pirates halfway through last season without any prior silverware, the former Highlands Park player has already secured two cups with the Buccaneers.
Saturday’s encounter with Sundowns holds particular weight for Makhaula. “This cup final means a lot to me because it will be my third medal if I take it or if I defend it,” expressed Makhaula.
Makhaula previously won the Nedbank Cup with Free State Stars in the 2017/18 season and again last season with Pirates.
The hardman welcomed former teammate and fellow midfielder Mbatha to the Pirates squad in January this year. The 24-year-old arrived on loan from SuperSport United and has impressed at Pirates, sparking rumors of a potential permanent move to the Soweto Giants.
As Mbatha’s midfield partner and mentor, Makhaula endorsed his performance, attributing it to hard work and a strong learning attitude. “I think he [Mbatha] is going to be one of the biggest talents in South Africa if he keeps on working hard because he always keeps on working hard and always learning,” said Makhaula.
Pirates will be aiming to repeat their 2022/23 season success on Saturday. Having already secured the MTN8 title and a second-place league finish, they now set their sights on defending the Nedbank Cup.
