Mdaka Regrets The Absence Of Mbokazi In The AFCON Squad

South African national football team U20 coach Raymond Mdaka has expressed the regret that he will not call upon defender Mbekezeli Mbokazi, who will not be available for the U/20 Africa Cup of Nations squad.

However, Mdaka praised Mbokazi’s defensive skills, stating, “I need to be honest, the boy was key in our defense.” The coach highlighted that Mbokazi had been an integral part of the team since the beginning of the camp.

Mdaka emphasized that while all players are important, Mbokazi stood out in defense. “All other players are the key players, but he was one of the most key players in our defense,” he said.

However, Mbokazi’s absence from the team is due to Orlando Pirates’ decision not to release him to play for the national team, as he has been promoted to the first team.

The coach’s comments reflect Mbokazi’s significant contributions to the team’s defensive strategy. “He is a player that we’ve been with since the beginning of the camp when I took over,” Mdaka added.

The absence of Mbokazi will undoubtedly impact the team’s dynamics, and Mdaka will need to find alternative solutions to strengthen the team’s defense. However, Mdaka called Mamelodi Sundowns centre-back Thato Sibiya to replace Mbokazi.

As Amajita prepares to take on the challenge of the AFCON U20 tournament in Egypt, Mdaka highlighted the complexity of their group. “The only thing that made us maybe to think twice is the number of teams in our group,” he said.

With five teams in Group A, including host Egypt, Sierra Leone, Tanzania, Zambia, and South Africa, Mdaka noted that the additional match would require careful planning.

“In a group of four, I think you know you have many games to play. In a group of five, you have an extra and extra match to play,” Mdaka explained.

Despite this challenge, the coach emphasized the team’s preparedness and flexibility. “We are going to the tournament, and in a tournament, you prepare everything because you will never know what will happen,” he said.

Mdaka’s comments demonstrate Amajita’s focus on preparation and resilience as they head into the AFCON U20 tournament, scheduled from 27 April to 18 May.

“We said that whatever comes, we are fine, and we’ll deal with the situation,” the coach added. With a pragmatic approach, the team is poised to tackle the challenges of their group and make a strong impression in the competition.”

As the team prepares to face Egypt, Sierra Leone, Tanzania, and Zambia in the group stage, Mdaka’s words highlight the importance of adaptability and strategic planning.

The absence of Mbokazi will require the team to regroup and find new ways to succeed. Mdaka’s leadership and the team’s determination will be crucial in overcoming these challenges.

With a strong squad and a well-planned strategy, the team is ready to take on the challenges of the group stage and make a lasting impression in the tournament. The upcoming tournament promises to be an exciting and competitive event, and Amajita is set to give it their all.
