Mngqithi: Our Game Against AS FAR Will Be Interesting

Mamelodi Sundowns coach Manqoba Mngqithi says their game against FAR Rabat will be interesting to watch because the opponent is a good team that always plays very well at home.

The Brazilians will face the Moroccan giant AS FAR in Morocco at Stade El Abdi in the second group stage match in the CAF Champions League on Saturday (21:00).

Sundowns started the group stages by playing to a 0-0 draw against AS Maniema last week at home. Rabat, on the other hand, beat fellow Moroccan side Raja Club Athletic 2-0.

Mngqithi believes that the Moroccan giants are an excellent team and they’ve been doing well in the past three seasons in the Botola Pro 1. “We are playing against a very good team in Morocco,” Mngqithi acknowledged.

“That AS FAR has done well in the past three seasons. It will be interesting to see how they want to play us because we have a very nice approach for matches like this, and I think that’s where we are stronger.

“It’s always going to be difficult sometimes when you are playing against teams with resistance, allowing the game to flow by sitting in. But normally North Africans don’t have that mentality, they want to come at you.

“They believe they’ve got a chance to beat you in their home ground, and they possess a different energy away and home. At home, they are highly motivated to come at you and try to get goals. Away from their supporters they usually want to sit back and try to look for counterattacks.

“It is very important to understand the dynamics of how we should approach this game. We are still going to look at it and the good thing is that I’ve been following them to try and see what they possess and comparing them to us. I think this will be an interesting game.”

Sundowns is currently sitting second with only one point in the Group B. On the other side, AS FAR are the log leaders in the group with three points.

Mngqithi’s side will face another Moroccan giant Raja next weekend at Loftus Stadium. This game will be the last game in 2024 for the Brazilians in the CAF Champions League.
