Mokwana: Why I turned Down Chiefs And Sundowns Offers

Bafana Bafana winger Elias Mokwana has revealed the key factors behind his decision to join Tunisian giants Esperance de Tunis over offers from the DStv Premiership.
Mokwana signed a three-year deal with the reigning Tunisian Ligue Professionnelle 1 champions, leaving Sekhukhune United to become the first South African player to represent the club. The Bafana international explained that he opted for a move away from home to seek new challenges.
“There was interest from teams like Mamelodi Sundowns and Kaizer Chiefs, but I wanted to step out of my comfort zone,” Mokwana told Esperance TV Taraji Plus. “We all know Esperance is one of the biggest clubs in the world, so I wanted to experience that and give my all.”
The winger, who made his Bafana Bafana debut in March, described his playing style to Esperance. “I’m a winner who likes to play on the wing, take on defenders, create chances for teammates, and score goals,” he said.
Esperance offers Mokwana the opportunity to compete for silverware and regular continental football, aligning with his ambitions.
“I feel really great, it’s like a dream come true because I’ve always dreamt of playing in the champions league, Club World Cup and the World Cup (for Bafana Bafana), so me coming here is a dream come true,” he said.
“I have to give my all, so that I can continue working for Taraji, so that we can at least win all trophies. Some people back at home think it’s a bad move, but I think it’s a great move, playing for one of the biggest teams in the world.
“I will continue working hard so that I can open doors for those back at home so that they can also come here. To the fans, thanks for welcoming me with love and care, I promise that I will give my all in the field and die for the badge,” he added.
Esperance knocked out Sundowns from the CAF Champions League last season before losing to Al Ahly in the final. Mokwana’s first match for the Tunisian giants will be against Arta/Solar/Dekedaha in the preliminary rounds next Tuesday.
