Mothiba: Bafana’s World Cup Dream Within Reach
Mamelodi Sundowns and Bafana Bafana striker Lebo Mothiba has expressed his satisfaction with the national team’s recent performances in the FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
After their 3-0 win over Lesotho and a 1-1 draw against Nigeria, Bafana Bafana are on top of Group C with 17 points after eight games played, leaving them in a strong position to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
“Yes, I’ve been part of the national team before, and I’m happy with the performance they are putting up there,” Mothiba said, who was part of the Bafana side that lost to Nigeria in the AFCON 2019 in Egypt.
“The game that they played against Nigeria was tough, and the group is very tough.
“But I’m quite happy with their performances and everything that the guys did, and we’re on top of the group, which is a big achievement.”
With just two games left to wrap up the qualifiers, scheduled for October, Bafana Bafana are on the verge of qualifying for the World Cup. A single victory will secure their place in the tournament, a remarkable achievement for the 1996 African champions.
Mothiba’s last competitive match for Bafana was in November 2023 during the friendly match against the Ivory Coast, and the 29-year-old has not featured in any competitive matches for Bafana since then.
