Nabi Addresses Ighodaro Transfer Delay
Kaizer Chiefs coach Nasreddine Nabi has provided an update on the delayed transfer of Mamelodi Sundowns striker Etiosa Ighodaro, amid swirling rumours that the center-forward has signed for Amakhosi.
The Nigerian joined the Brazilians at the beginning of the 2021/22 season. Still, it was immediately subjected to a series of loan spells to AmaTuks, Chippa United, the now-defunct SuperSport United, and recently AmaZulu.
During his loan stint with Usuthu in the previous campaign, Ighodaro scored six goals in 27 appearances across all competitions. Overall, the player has so far netted 22 goals and provided four assists in 86 matches in PSL competitions.
With the start of the 2025/26 Betway Premiership season looming, the Chiefs mentor set the record straight on the potential signing, revealing that administrative issues are the main stumbling block in the mooted transfer.
“It’s a player that belongs to another team with administrative issues, but him or another striker that we have on our shortlist of potential players will be welcomed. We will wait to hear from our administration if he or another player is going to join,” said Nabi.
While Nabi admits he likes the player, he refrained from delving deep into the matter, stating that Ighodaro is not contracted to the Soweto giants despite a video of the player wearing the Chiefs regalia having been leaked online.
“I saw the player last season playing for AmaZulu, and I believe he’s a good player, but it’s a player that doesn’t belong to our club right now. We can’t really talk about him,” added the Tunisian tactician who guided the Glamour Boys to the Nedbank Cup title in his first season in charge.
Chiefs will kick off their season with a clash against Stellenbosch FC at Athlone Stadium on Sunday. The encounter was initially scheduled to take place at the DHL Stadium, but the Premier Soccer League (PSL) announced the venue change decision on Wednesday.
