Ncikazi Rules Out Excuses Ahead Of Athlone Weather Battle
Orlando Pirates assistant coach Mandla Ncikazi has emphasised the importance of securing three points when the Buccaneers face Stellenbosch in Tuesday night’s Betway Premiership clash at Athlone Stadium, as they continue their pursuit of the league title.
Pirates head into the match determined to strengthen their title ambitions and close the gap at the top of the standings.
Mamelodi Sundowns currently lead the table with 64 points, while the Buccaneers sit second on 59—leaving Abdeslam Ouaddou’s side five points adrift with little margin for error in the closing stages of the campaign.
This will be the second league meeting between the two sides this season, after Pirates defeated Stellenbosch in the first-round clash at home earlier in the campaign. The Soweto giants will now be aiming to complete a league double over Stellies at a crucial stage of the title race.
The match also carries historical significance for Pirates, who are chasing their first league title since the 2011/12 season.
The last time they travelled to Athlone Stadium while involved in a title battle was on 4 May 2019, when Cape Town City dealt a major blow to their hopes by coming from behind to secure a dramatic 2–2 draw.
With another high-pressure trip to Athlone awaiting them, Ncikazi says the focus remains clear despite the challenging conditions expected in Cape Town.
“The preparations are straightforward—three points are vital,” he said.
“We are focused on the process of securing those three points in tough conditions in Cape Town. Challenging conditions push us to get the best out of ourselves.
“We want to perform, stick to our game plan, and outscore the opponent. With what is happening at the club and the players being well prepared, I believe we can overcome Stellenbosch.”
A victory for Pirates would keep their title hopes alive and ensure the pressure remains firmly on Sundowns at the top of the Betway Premiership standings.
