Ncikazi: Why Every Game Still Matters For Orlando Pirates

Orlando Pirates interim coach Mandla Ncikazi believes there’s still much to play for, despite the league title race being over. His comments came after their 1-0 victory over SuperSport at Peter Mokaba Stadium on Tuesday.

Ncikazi took charge of the remaining Pirates games on an interim basis following the departure of Jose Riveiro. The Soweto Giants currently sit in second position with 59 points after 26 games, with two matches left in their season.

Ncikazi clarified that Pirates continue to play for a variety of reasons, emphasizing the importance of players contributing to the club’s history, despite claims that there’s nothing left to achieve.

“Contrary to what people are saying, there’s nothing to play for, I think there’s so much to play for,” said Ncikazi.

“One, the records are important in the club. These players must be part of the history of having done what has happened, like you’re counting game number 19.”

Ncikazi further highlighted that they are still competing for individual awards, noting that nothing is confirmed yet. Players like Nkosinathi Sibisi, Deon Hotto, and Tshegofatso Mabasa still have a chance to win them.

“Secondly, there are still individual awards for all these players. The goalkeeper of the season might come from our club, a defender of the season might come from Sibisi, who has a big opportunity, and Deon Hotto has a big opportunity. Tshegofatso is chasing the leading goal scorer, there’s still a possibility, nothing is confirmed until the end,” Ncikazi said.

He added, “So for me, there’s still so much to play for. The history, but on top of everything, these are professionals; they are paid to play and train. No game has any impact, especially if you play for a team like Orlando Pirates.”

Pirates now turn their attention to AmaZulu at the Moses Mabhida Stadium on Saturday, a venue where they previously lost the Nedbank Cup final to Kaizer Chiefs on 10 May.
