Ngezana Clinch League Title In Romania

South African international defender Siyabonga Ngezana has clinched his first league title in his debut season with Romanian club Steaua Bucuresti.
Ngezana joined the club from Kaizer Chiefs for a reported fee of R12 million during the off season, with Amakhosi securing a sell-on clause in the deal.
The title win was secured after defeating FCV Farul Constanta 2-1 at home on Saturday. Goals from Raul Miculescu in the first half and Mihail Baluta in the second, with the latter a late winner, sealed the victory. This marked the club’s first title in nine years and Ngezana’s first ever league championship, having come up empty-handed during his time at Chiefs. This was Steaua’s 27th league title, having finished the regular season atop the standings ahead of Rapid Bucharest.
The victory also grants them entry into the early stages of the UEFA Champions League, a competition they famously won in the 1985/86 season. Despite facing early struggles and criticism from the club chairman, Ngezana emerged as a key player, starting 29 of the 30 league matches.
He nearly earned a call-up to Hugo Broos’ Bafana Bafana squad that secured a bronze medal at the Africa Cup of Nations finals in Ivory Coast. Ngezana was included in Broos’ March friendly matches but couldn’t participate due to missing documentation, as explained by the coach: “Ngezana lost his documents, and for that reason, he couldn’t leave Romania.”
Ngezana will hope to have his documents cleared in time for Bafana’s 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Nigeria (away) and Zimbabwe (home) in June.
