“Only Defending” – Broos Fumes At Tactics After Bafana Stalemate

Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos expressed satisfaction despite his side’s 0-0 draw against Nicaragua in an international friendly at the Orlando Amstel Arena on Friday.

The match was part of South Africa’s preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which will be co-hosted by the United States, Mexico, and Canada. South Africa has been drawn into Group A alongside Mexico, the Czech Republic, and South Korea.

While Bafana Bafana were unable to secure a victory against a side ranked 110th in the world, their biggest missed opportunity came from the penalty spot—failing to give local supporters a winning send-off.

Despite the frustrating result, Broos remained positive. He noted that Nicaragua spent most of the match defending deep, making it incredibly difficult for South Africa to create clear-cut chances.

“I think we can be happy with the team, even though we didn’t win,” said Broos.

“But when you play against such a defensive opponent, it becomes difficult. Those players came here to defend and just kick the ball forward. Then, towards the end, there were injuries almost every minute.

“That made things very negative, and it became very difficult. We missed a penalty, and if we had scored it, I think we could have gone on to score more goals. We tried to play football, while the opponent didn’t try anything except defending.”
