Onyango: Winning Second Champions League Title Would Be Very Incredible

Mamelodi Sundowns goalkeeper Denis Onyango is on the cusp of making history as his team prepares to face Egyptian giants Pyramids in the second leg of the CAF Champions League final.

After a 1-1 draw in the first leg in South Africa, Sundowns will head to Cairo to the 30 June Stadium on Sunday, seeking to lift the coveted trophy for the second time in their history.

Onyango, who was part of the Sundowns squad that won the competition in 2016 under coach Pitso Mosimane, is confident that his team can emerge victorious.

“It will be very incredible (if we win) because I will be the first player to win two CAF Champions League titles for the club,” Onyango said on SuperSport TV, highlighting the significance of the win for both himself and the club.

The former SuperSport United goalkeeper praised the management’s hard work in taking the team on this journey.

“Of course, for the club it’s massive to go on this journey and the management has been working very hard,” he said.

Onyango also acknowledged the competition’s history, noting that North African teams have dominated the competition for years.

“We took this journey alongside Orlando Pirates, but unfortunately, they didn’t make it, but we have a chance to lift the flag of South African football, because North Africans have done this for so many years,” he said.

Onyango emphasized the need for Southern African teams to make their mark on the continent.

“We need to lift the Southern African football because North Africans have done this, so we also need to promote Southern African football,” he said, underscoring the importance of this win for the region.

Themba Zwane, who was also part of the 2016 winning team, and goalkeeper coach Kennedy Mweene, who won the title as a player in 2016, are also looking to add to their collection.

Sundowns will need to overcome a tough Pyramids side to lift the trophy as they conceded in the last minute in the first leg, but Onyango’s confidence and determination could be the key to their success.

With the stage set for an electrifying encounter, Sundowns fans will be hoping that their team can bring home the title and make history in African football.
