Ouaddou Explains Makgopa And Mabasa’s Absence
Orlando Pirates coach Abdelsam Ouaddou has stated that the absence of strikers Tshegofatso Mabasa and Evidence Makgopa from the MTN8 quarter-final win against Polokwane City shouldn’t be over-analyzed.
The coach emphasized that both players are crucial to his plans.
The decision to field Boitumelo Radiopane as the starting striker at a packed Orlando Stadium came as a surprise, given Mabasa and Makgopa’s key roles in the team’s second-place league finish, their CAF Champions League semi-final run, and their MTN8 title triumph last season.
Ouaddou explained that their omission was a strategic choice to give other players an opportunity to play and to manage the squad’s freshness across multiple competitions.
“Makgopa and Mabasa are very important players for me,” he said. “We have a big squad… We win games with the starting 11, but we win competitions with the group. Everyone’s contribution will be important this season.”
In addition to Mabasa and Makgopa, Pirates also signed Yanela Mbuthuma from Richards Bay during the off-season.
When asked about the challenge of keeping a large, talented squad happy, Ouaddou stressed the importance of a human-centered approach.
“First of all, I want to say love. Give love to everyone,” Ouaddou responded.
“Bring the human being to the table. It is very important to put trust on the table… The dynamics, the size of the club, the number of competitions the club is playing, the sincerity, the honesty, the love that the coach is giving to them, can help you to keep everyone happy.”
Pirates will begin their 2025/26 Betway Premiership season by hosting Sekhukhune United at Orlando Stadium on Saturday at 15:00.
