Pirates, CT City Join Race For Azam Star

Betway Premiership clubs Orlando Pirates and Cape Town City have reportedly joined the race for the signature of highly sought-after Azam FC winger Gibril Sillah, who is set to leave the club on a free transfer.
Having joined the Tanzanian Premier League side in July 2023 after leaving Raja Casablanca, the Gambian star rejected the Chamazi Millionaires’ lucrative two-year extension on his current deal that is set to expire at the end of the ongoing season in Tanzania.
In the 2024/25 season, Sillah scored nine league goals so far, six behind reported Kaizer Chiefs target Jean Charles Ahoua, who sits at the summit of the scoring chart with 15 goals. In addition, the 26-year-old left winger has provided two assists in 20 games.
Interestingly, the Gambian international, who made his senior national team debut against Equatorial Guinea on Friday, signed with a new agency ahead of a mooted move as several clubs across the continent are keen on his services.
Pirates are said to be interested in luring the highly rated player to Mayfair, with the potential departure of young sensation Relebohile Mofokeng to Europe likely to leave a void on the left flank for the Buccaneers.
Meanwhile, the Citizens are also believed to fancy themselves in convincing Sillah to join them in the mother city. However, the Cape club is currently embroiled in a PSL Promotion/Relegation scrap with Orbit College and Casric Stars after a dismal 15th-place finish in the league last season.
In addition to the two South African top-flight clubs, there is a strong interest in the player in Algeria, Egypt, Morocco, and Tanzania, where Fadlu Davids’ Simba SC is understood to be monitoring the situation closely after missing out in 2023.
The race to acquire Sillah’s services on a free transfer remains open, with recent reports from North Africa suggesting the player rebuffed interest from Algerian Ligue 1 outfit ES Setif, who currently sit in position six on the log standings.
