Pirates Secure Champions League Semi-Final Spot

Orlando Pirates have joined Mamelodi Sundowns in reaching the CAF Champions League semi-finals after securing a goalless draw in the second leg of their quarter-final clash at Orlando Stadium against MC Alger on Wednesday.
Tshegofatso Mabasa nearly sealed victory in stoppage time, striking the post with a late effort, but the draw proved sufficient for Pirates’ progression.
Pirates entered the match with a 1-0 advantage from the first leg, courtesy of Mohau Nkota’s goal, and defended resolutely to deny MC Alger any foothold in Soweto.
Although Alger threatened late through Abdelkader Menezla’s header, it posed no significant challenge to Pirates goalkeeper Sipho Chaine.
This semi-final appearance marks Pirates’ first since 2013, when they reached the final, ultimately losing to Al Ahly. They are the second South African team to advance, joining Sundowns, who overcame ES Esperance on Tuesday.
Pirates will now face Pyramids in the semi-finals, following the Egyptian side’s victory over AS Far Rabat. Pirates, who made only one change from their first-leg lineup, faced early pressure from Alger.
The Algerians adopted an aggressive approach from the outset, taking the initiative. However, their attempts to exploit Pirates’ back three with runs in behind were thwarted by the home side’s deep defensive line.
Pirates’ strategy of counter-attacking nearly paid off when Deon Hotto’s strike narrowly missed the target in the 10th minute. Larbi Tabti’s quick succession of moves, bypassing Thapelo Xoki and Makhehleni Makhaula, was ultimately neutralized by Nkosinathi Sibisi, as Alger continued to dominate possession.
As the first half progressed, Alger coach Khaled Ben Yahia appeared increasingly frustrated by his side’s inability to penetrate Pirates’ defense, despite their possession dominance. Pirates, however, began to gain control towards the end of the half.
Recognizing the need for a tactical adjustment, Pirates adopted a more assertive approach in the second half. Alger’s high-pressing tactics diminished, allowing Pirates to push higher up the pitch.
In the 70th minute, Pirates coach Jose Riveiro introduced Patrick Maswanganyi and Phillip Ndlondlo, replacing Thalente Mbatha and Nkota, in an attempt to inject fresh impetus into his team’s attack. A stray pass from Xoki nearly resulted in a Pirates opportunity, but Relebohile Mofokeng’s attempted pass was blocked.
Alger finally registered their first shot in referee’s optional time on target when Menezla’s header was comfortably saved by Chaine. Mabasa, who replaced Evidence Makgopa, came close to extending Pirates’ lead, but his shot struck the post after Alger failed to clear a dangerous situation.
Ultimately, Pirates held firm, securing the goalless draw and advancing to the semi-finals with a 1-0 aggregate victory.
