Sangweni Joins with Umsinga FC

Former Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Thami Sangweni has joined lower-division side Umsinga FC in the ABC Motsepe League.

Umsinga were involved in the ABC National Playoffs last season but could not gain Motsepe Foundation Championship spot.

Sangweni appeared for the Motsepe League club recently, signaling his intent to revive his career after a decline in recent years. His last professional stint was with TS Sporting in the 2021/22 season.

The 34-year-old’s career began with a three-season spell at AmaZulu (2009-2012). During this time, he narrowly missed out on the Nedbank Cup trophy in his first season, losing to Bidvest Wits in 2010.

In 2012, Sangweni secured a move to Mamelodi Sundowns. His debut was a memorable one, scoring a goal in a 4-1 victory against Kaizer Chiefs in the MTN8 quarter-final. However, his playing time dwindled after two seasons, leading to a loan stint with Cape Town Spurs in the 2013/14 season.

Following a similar pattern at Sundowns, he joined Chippa United for three seasons (2014-2017). A chance to follow in his brother Siyabonga’s footsteps came in the 2017/18 season when he signed with Orlando Pirates. Unfortunately, his tenure with the Soweto giants was short-lived, lasting only one season where Pirates finished runners-up to Sundowns.

The next two years saw Sangweni on loan back at Chippa and then with Richards Bay in the Motsepe Foundation Championship. Determined to keep his career going, he spent two seasons each with Maritzburg United and TS Sporting before landing at Umsinga FC.

On the international stage, Sangweni was part of Shakes Mashaba’s Bafana Bafana squad at the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations finals in Equatorial Guinea, although he remained an unused substitute throughout the tournament.
