Shalulile Dealt Royal AM A Huge Blow

Peter Shalulile crushed Royal AM’s hopes, guiding in a short corner to secure all three points against John Maduka’s side at Lucas Moripe Stadium on Saturday night.

Maduka’s men had frustrated Rulani Mokwena’s Sundowns for most of the match. However, their resistance crumbled in the 85th minute when Shalulile, unmarked, headed Lesiba Nku’s cross past Hugo Nyame.

There were questions about a potential offside position for Junior Mendieta interfering with Nyame’s view, but it ultimately didn’t matter. The DStv Premiership lacks VAR technology to review such incidents.

This victory extends Sundowns’ lead at the top of the table. Already champions of the 2023/24 season, they now have 66 points after 26 matches. Their sights are set on breaking the 2015/16 record of 71 points, the highest since the league adopted its current 16-team format. Last season, they fell just short, finishing with 70 points.

Coach Mokwena has challenged his team to break the record and solidify their place as one of the best sides in PSL history. They remain unbeaten in 27 league matches and are on course to complete the season without a loss, an unprecedented feat in the PSL.

For Royal AM, the situation is worrisome. This defeat marks their fourth consecutive league loss, with the added agony of failing to score in any of those matches. They now find themselves nervously looking over their shoulders, positioned 14th with 29 points after 27 games. They hold a precarious five-point lead over 15th-placed Richards Bay.

Moroka Swallows earned some breathing room with a 2-0 victory against Stellenbosch FC earlier on Saturday. They now sit on 33 points after playing an extra game. But more importantly for Royal AM, they are mathematically safe from relegation, boasting a 10-point cushion over bottom side Cape Town Spurs, who drew with SuperSport United on Friday. However, they could still be dragged into the playoff spot if Richards Bay wins all their remaining matches.
