Sharks Stun Munster In URC Quarter-Final Thriller, Face Bulls In Semis

Two South African teams have reached the semi-finals of the United Rugby Championship after the Sharks held their nerve in a dramatic penalty shootout to defeat Munster at Kings Park Stadium on Saturday.
The match, which finished 24-24 after extra time, was decided by place kicks. The Sharks will now face the Blue Bulls, who secured their semi-final spot earlier on Saturday with a come-from-behind 42-33 victory over Edinburgh at Loftus Versfeld Stadium. Jake White’s side was awaiting the winner of the Sharks vs. Munster clash in Durban.
Munster, the 2023 champions of this competition, took an early lead in Durban when Calvin Nash scored out wide, with Jack Crowley converting the try. These were the only seven points scored in a frustrating first half for the home side.
However, after a quiet first half, the Sharks started the second half strongly. Ethan Hooker sliced through the Munster defence to score, leveling the score at 7-7. Whatever John Plumtree said to his side at halftime clearly worked, as the home team showed renewed vigor and took the game to the visitors. They mauled Munster off the scrums, with Springbok front-rower Ox Nche at the heart of their attacking efforts.
The Sharks soon took the lead for the first time in the game when Jaden Hendrikse converted a penalty in the 54th minute, making it 10-7. However, that momentum was quickly thwarted by Josh Wycherley two minutes later with a try, and Crowley added the extras to put Munster ahead 12-10. The game seemed to be slipping away from the Sharks as Diarmuid Kilgallen scored the visitor’s third try in the 60th minute, extending their lead to 21-10.
Aphelele Fassi, running through from a tight scrum, then scored a crucial try, injecting life back into the home side and signalling that the game was far from over. This brought the score to 17-21 in favour of the visitors, who put up a strong fight on what turned out to be a chilly Durban night. It meant the Sharks needed another try to turn the game around.
That moment eventually arrived. The Sharks secured the ball, and Fez Mbatha dived over between the posts, allowing the home side to retake the lead, with Hendrikse adding the conversion. Munster then earned a penalty close to the center circle. Instead of opting for a kick to touch for potential further points, Conor Murray chose to kick for the posts, leveling the game at 24-24.
As the game teetered on a knife-edge, calm discipline was required. However, with no further score, the match ended 24-24 and went into extra time. The first 10 minutes of extra time also produced no points, though the Sharks came close when Jaden Hendrikse’s attempted drop goal was blocked.
With no winner decided in extra time and still no additional points on the board, the game proceeded to a penalty shootout. It was here that the Sharks held firm, winning the shootout 6-4. Munster players were left crushed, with some visibly in tears at the final whistle, highlighting the intense emotional impact of this beloved game.
However, the Sharks will not dwell on their opponent’s disappointment as their season continues with an away tie against the Bulls in the semi-finals. The other semi-final will be contested by Irish side Leinster against the defending champions, Glasgow Warriors of Scotland.
