Springbok Captain Rallies Behind Sundowns For Champions League

Springbok captain Siya Kolisi has called on all South Africans to unite behind Mamelodi Sundowns as they face ES Esperance in the CAF Champions League semi-final on Saturday (21:00).

The “African giants,” aiming for a historic quadruple this season, will face Esperance in the first leg at Stade Olympique Hammadi Agrebi in Rades, Tunisia.

Sundowns previously met Esperance in the 2017 group stages, drawing away before a 2-1 defeat at home under coach Pitso Mosimane. This time, Kolisi hopes for a different outcome.

“I want to wish you all the best for the semifinal,” Kolisi said in a message to Sundowns. “All South Africans, no matter who you support locally, we are behind you. You are not only representing Sundowns fans, but all of South Africa. We wish you nothing but the best. Get stuck in, this is it!”

Kolisi offered a specific message to attacking midfielder Themba Zwane: “Cowards are not needed now. Themba Zwane, lead the boys, have fun. You have done it before for us, you are going to do it again. Let’s go gents!”

Sundowns, seeking their first Champions League title since 2016, are making their second consecutive appearance in the semi-finals. The return leg will be played next Friday (20:00) at Loftus Stadium in Pretoria.
