Stellenbosch Won’t Block Barns’ Participation In Bay’s Playoffs
Stellenbosch FC won’t prevent Sanele Barns from playing in the upcoming PSL promotion/relegation playoffs for Richards Bay.
This decision stems from Barns’ existing contract with Richards Bay, which remains valid until the end of June 2026.
Barns signed with Stellenbosch during the January transfer window but will join them next season with minimal rest. Ironically, Richards Bay defeated Barns’ future team 2-1 on the final day of the season at King Zwelithini Stadium on Saturday, securing 15th place.
Barns played a crucial role, assisting the team’s second goal by clipping a well-placed free kick that was brillianty met by Yanela Mbuthuma.
“While we’d have preferred him not to play for Richards Bay,” a source revealed, “his existing contract with them takes precedence.”
Stellenbosch acknowledges the toll this might take on Barns, considering their busy schedule next season. They will participate in five competitions, including the CAF Confederation Cup. Coach Steve Barker expressed his disappointment at missing out on second place, partially attributing it to Barns’ performance.
Meanwhile, Orlando Pirates secured the coveted second-place finish and a CAF Champions League spot after drawing with SuperSport United at Orlando Stadium on Saturday. They edged past Stellenbosch on goal difference.
Richards Bay’s playoff journey begins next Wednesday with a home game against University of Pretoria. The following four days see them travel to Baroka, followed by an away match against Barns’ former club, Tuks, on 15 June. Their final playoff game will be at home four days later, where they hope to retain their top-flight status
