Stellies CEO: We Want To Keep Chiefs Target

Stellenbosch FC CEO Rob Benadie has confirmed that Kaizer Chiefs have made an offer for Fawaaz Basadien but insists the club is determined to retain his services.

Benadie highlighted Basadien’s significance to the club, stating that they recently improved his contract to reflect his pivotal role in their historic third-place finish in the Betway Premiership last season.

The former Moroka Swallows left-back has continued his impressive form this season, scoring two goals in Steve Barker’s side’s MTN8 quarter-final victory over TS Galaxy and the 3-0 CAF Confederation Cup win over Nsingizini Hotspurs. His dead-ball expertise has further solidified his value to Stellenbosch.

“Fawaaz is a consummate professional. Yes, there is an offer from Kaizer Chiefs, but we improved his contract recently and he still contracted with Stellenbosch FC,” Benadie said in Durban on Friday.

“We want to keep him because he’s a fantastic player. We don’t want to go backwards with our squad, we want to continue and do similar type of performance we did last year.

“So, Fawaaz is very important to us, he knows that, he understands that. There will always be pressure from the press, from other clubs to our players because we are doing so well. But I trust in Fawaaz as an individual as a player to be the professional that he is.

“We have seen that in the first two games.”

Stellenbosch has already lost Iqraam Rayners to Mamelodi Sundowns and captain Deano van Rooyen to Orlando Pirates this season. Unlike European countries, the PSL’s transfer window remains open until 20 September, a situation Benadie finds unsettling for players.

“It’s not ideal, there are a number of players – not just at our club but at other clubs too, because the transfer window is open for so long, which is really unsettling,” he said.

“At least we’re playing games, there are a lot of clubs that aren’t playing so they have to wait and there’s transfer speculation on their players, so at least we’re playing games and that makes it a little bit easier for us.

“But then it’s also more opportunities for other clubs to see our players playing so well, and it’s going to go until the last day of the transfer window.

“But we’re quite steadfast on a certain number of players. We have already lost some important players as you know – some of it was unavoidable, so we don’t want to lose Fawaz. We will do our utmost best to keep him here and keep him happy.”
