Barker: Basadien’s Injury Is Not Bad

Stellenbosch coach Steve Barker has confirmed that star defender Fawaaz Basadien’s injury is not serious and expect him to be fit for the MTN8 semifinal against Mamelodi Sundowns.

Stellenbosch will travel to face the reigning and seventh successive league champions in the first leg of the MTN8 semifinal at Lucas Moripe Stadium on Wednesday.

Basadien, who has been targeted by Kaizer Chiefs, was forced off before halftime due to a severe ankle injury during the second leg of the CAF Confederation Cup preliminary round against Nsingizini Hotspurs at the Moses Mabhida Stadium on Saturday.

The left-back was helped off the field by the medical team, and coach Barker immediately substituted him due to his importance to the side.

“I haven’t had a chance to assess the full extent of the injury yet, but it appears to be a contusion, and it’s obviously painful,” Barker said at the press conference at the Moses Mabhida Stadium on Saturday. “However, I believe he will be available for the Sundowns match.”

Towards the end of the game, Basadien was seen walking normally, which is positive news for Barker.

Basadien has been a key player for Stellenbosch this season, contributing two goals and an assist in three matches.

Following the first leg of the Wafa Wafa Cup against Sundowns at Lucas Moripe Stadium on Wednesday, the second leg will take place at the Moses Mabhida Stadium on Sunday.
