Stellies Star Eyes To Keep The Momentum Going

Stellenbosch’s Andre de Jong is buzzing with confidence ahead of their upcoming Nedbank Cup quarter-final clash against SuperSport United at Danie Craven Stadium on Saturday.

Speaking on the team’s hot form, the New Zealand national says their record 20-unbeaten run of games will give them a boost against a very formidable opponent in SuperSport.

“We are super excited for this game, it’s a big game for the club to try and get to another semi-final and hopefully go one better this year and make the final,” said de Jong.

“SuperSport (is) a very tricky team, and poses a lot of threats, especially going forward. Hopefully, we can keep the same form that we’ve been in and progress this weekend.”

Stellenbosch will look to make de Jong their focal point in their semi-final game after his Man of the Match winning performance in their last league game against Sekhukhune United.

Additionally, he has only made two appearances in the Nedbank Cup in which he managed to score two goals.

“It was nice to play 90 minutes finally (in a draw against Sekhukhune United), I think it gives the whole team confidence,” reflected de Jong.

“Obviously Sekhukhune was in very good form coming into the game – nice clean sheet at home, we could’ve pushed for more. Probably deserved more from the game but we’ll take it as a confidence booster into the weekend.”

When asked about the team’s form and the secret to maintaining their good run of games, de Jong was very complimentary of the coaching staff and his teammates, saying they are all pulling in the same direction, which creates internal competition.

“I think it’s the technical team, their consistency in their team selection, also I think they are very good in giving the whole squad a run as well,”

“You’ve got times where Antonio Van Wyk will come in for me, so I think that breeds internal competition and I think that’s been one of the key things in the run of 20 games.”

This semi-final game is scheduled to kick off at 15:00, which marks the 14th meeting between the two teams Stellenbosch and SuperSport, a match-up in which SuperSport has been regular victors. However, their patchy league form compared to Stellenbosch’s invincible run paints them as underdogs.

Stellies, who lost in the semi-final of the Ke Yona Cup last season, their super form has rewarded them with a Carling Knockout Cup trophy this term.
