Sukazi: Why I’m Taking Mokwena To Court

TS Galaxy chairman Tim Sukazi has explained to Sportswire the reason behind taking Mamelodi Sundowns coach Rulani Mokwena to court.

Following Mokwena’s failure to retract his comments, Galaxy filed a lawsuit in the Gauteng High Court seeking damages. The lawsuit’s outcome will likely be decided by a court settlement or ruling.

The lawsuit stems from comments Mokwena made on SuperSport TV before the match between the two teams at Loftus Stadium a few weeks ago.

Mokwena claimed that Galaxy coach Sead Ramovic instructed his players to retaliate for a tackle by Bongani Zungu on Bernard Parker in a previous encounter during the Carling Knockout first round in October at the same venue in Mpumalanga.

Galaxy issued a statement demanding an apology from Mokwena within 24 hours as they considered these comments defamatory and demanded a retraction. While a high-ranking source revealed Sundowns manager Yogesh Singh attempted to arrange an apology with Galaxy boss Tim Sukazi, scheduling conflicts prevented it.

“We have now instituted a claim for damages on his utterances,” said Sukazi to Sportswire.

“You will remember in our letter we demanded that he retracts his comments failing which we will institute legal proceedings for damages claim? This is now the claim for damages following his failure to retract his comments.”

The situation worsened during the match that ended in a 1-1 draw at Mbombela Stadium on Tuesday. Ramovic, after the game, made a sarcastic remark about Sundowns needing superstars like Mbappe, Messi, and Ronaldo to beat his side, who truly rattled the African giants. As the high-intensity game ended in a draw, it was marked by a post-match scuffle between the benches that required police intervention.
