Mokwena: Playing Galaxy At The Moment Is A Torture

Mamelodi Sundowns coach Rulani Mokwena expressed his disapproval of playing against TS Galaxy, calling it “torture” due to the unsavory scenes that unfolded during their encounter at Mbombela Stadium on Tuesday.

The match between Mokwena’s Sundowns and TS Galaxy’s Sead Ramovic was marred by tension and a post-game scuffle that required police intervention. This animosity stems from prior confrontations between the two teams this season.

The first incident occurred during the Carling Knockout where Galaxy defeated Sundowns. During that match, Bongani Zungu’s challenge resulted in a leg injury for Bernard Parker.

Mokwena alleged that before their recent league encounter at Loftus Stadium, Ramovic instructed his players to retaliate for Zungu’s tackle on Parker. In that match, Zungu himself was injured after a rough challenge from Orebotse Mangae, who received a red card.

Despite the high intensity and excellent football on display at Mbombela Stadium, the highly anticipated clash ended in a 1-1 draw. Galaxy took the lead through Puso Dithejane in the 77th minute, but Peter Shalulile equalized for Sundowns late in the game.

However, Mokwena’s main grievance was the officiating. He felt Sundowns were denied a clear penalty when Siyabonga Mabena was brought down inside the box. The referee initially appeared to point to the spot kick for a penalty but then changed his mind.

Mokwena further criticized what he perceived as unsportsmanlike behavior from TS Galaxy technical team.

“Not much to say about the game,” Mokwena told Nosipho Hadebe of Rise FM after the game.

“I’m not involved with these types of matches. So, I don’t want to speak too much about the match. Tash’s (Tashreeq Matthews’) incident in the first half was a clear penalty, and Mabena’s in the second half was a clear penalty.

“So many fouls that went against us. Marcelo Allende gets stamped on his hand (by Dithejane) and he gets a yellow card (for retaliation) and they score and the whole bench just jumped into our faces and showed so much disrespect, I don’t like that, I am not involved in football for that. Sorry.

“I love football for friendship, I love football for memories, I love football for the purity of the game and what it brings to the people and the enjoyment that it brings to people.

“Playing TS Galaxy at the moment is torture, is something I don’t enjoy at the moment, no.”

The post-match scuffle could see both clubs facing disciplinary action from the PSL Prosecutor Zola Majavu for bringing the league into disrepute.
