Sundowns Need Six Points To Reclaim The Title

Mamelodi Sundowns secured a narrow 2-1 victory over Sekhukhune United in the DStv Premiership match at Loftus Stadium on Tuesday night, serving as a warm-up for their crucial CAF Champions League clash against ES Esperance.

The win takes the African giants to 56 points from 22 matches, needing just six points to secure their seventh consecutive league title.

Tashreeq Matthews (his second goal this season) and Thapelo Morena scored for Sundowns in the first half. However, Sekhukhune threatened a comeback in the second half after Chibuike Ohizu converted a penalty in the 50th minute.

Coach Rulani Mokwena made wholesale changes, fielding an entirely different team with one eye on the Champions League second leg semifinal against ES Esperance, scheduled for the same venue on Friday. Esperance currently leads the tie 1-0 after their first-leg victory in Rades last Saturday.

The start unfolded as Mokwena envisioned. Lebogang Maboe found Morena, but Daniel Cardoso intervened. However, the loose ball fell to Matthews, who slotted it home brilliantly in the second minute.

Five minutes later, the roles were reversed. Sekhukhune defender Tresor Tshibwabwa miscued a clearance, allowing Matthews to set up Morena for another well-taken finish.

This early lead mirrored Sundowns’ performance against Swallows in their previous league match, where they also scored twice in the first half. However, unlike against Swallows, Sundowns held on for the victory here.

Sekhukhune’s penalty, conceded by Brian Onyango on Vusi Mncube, sparked a period of dominance for the visitors. They enjoyed a good spell of possession, putting pressure on the Sundowns defense.

Despite the second-half pressure, Sundowns managed to close out the game, extending their unbeaten league run to 46 matches. Conversely, this marked Sekhukhune’s first league defeat of 2024.
