Sundowns, Pirates, And Chiefs Flop As Stellenbosch Moves To The Summit!

The DStv Diski Challenge (DDC) witnessed a weekend of upsets for the “big three”: Mamelodi Sundowns, Orlando Pirates, and Kaizer Chiefs. All three giants were brought down a peg.

Orlando Pirates Loses Ground

Orlando Pirates’ title aspirations took a hit after a disappointing 1-0 loss to Stellenbosch FC. Stellenbosch, now leading the log standings, dominated the match and could have secured a wider margin of victory. Langelihle Phili’s first-half goal proved decisive, securing Stellenbosch a double victory over Pirates this season (having won with the same scoreline earlier). Pirates’ penalty miss in the 54th minute, courtesy of Lebo Mohlala, only compounded their woes.

This result sees Stellenbosch, with 57 points after 26 matches, ascend to the DDC summit. The Winelands outfit now has a chance to emulate Golden Arrows, the only team besides themselves to win the Diski Challenge twice (2015/16 & 2017/18 seasons).

Mamelodi Sundowns Toppled

Mamelodi Sundowns’ youngsters were architects of their own downfall, losing 1-0 to Sekhukhune United. Despite dominating possession, Sundowns failed to penetrate Sekhukhune’s resolute defense. A second-half substitution, Keletso Sifama, punished Sundowns’ single lapse in concentration, securing all three points for Babina Noko. This defeat sees Sundowns relinquish top spot and face a significant challenge in their next match against Kaizer Chiefs.

Kaizer Chiefs’ Title Hopes Dashed

Following a 3-1 home defeat to Cape Town Spurs last week, many predicted a Kaizer Chiefs rout against Polokwane City. However, the script unfolded differently. While Chiefs took the lead through Donay Janse in the 14th minute, Polokwane City displayed remarkable resilience, scoring twice within ten minutes (20th & 30th) and holding on for a crucial victory. This result, Polokwane City’s third win in 26 matches, effectively ends Kaizer Chiefs’ title aspirations, leaving them 10 points behind the leaders.
