Sundowns Wary Of Arrows Despite Dominant First-Round Win

Mamelodi Sundowns defender Zuko Mdunyelwa warns his team against complacency despite their resounding 4-0 victory over Golden Arrows in the first round of the season.

Sundowns dismantled the Durban side at Lucas Moripe Stadium back in August. Arrows opted for a defensive strategy, allowing Sundowns to control the game and score through Lesiba Nku (brace), Peter Shalulile, and Grant Kekana.

With the league title already secured after their win over Kaizer Chiefs last week, Sundowns head into Wednesday’s return fixture at Mpumalanga Stadium (19:30) with the aim of maintaining their unbeaten league record. While some might expect an easy victory, Mdunyelwa cautions against underestimating a motivated Arrows team.

“Golden Arrows are a team that typically challenges for a top-eight finish,” Mdunyelwa said. “Finding themselves outside that zone now, they’ll be fighting and try to get back in. We can’t understimate them, we need to go there, earn the right to play, and fight for the win.”

Sundowns are chasing a treble this season, having already secured the African Football League title in November and reaching the Nedbank Cup final with a win over Stellenbosch FC on Sunday.

“Preparations are going well, and the mood is high after our weekend win,” said Mdunyelwa, who joined Sundowns from Chippa United in the January transfer window. “But winning the cup only fuels our desire to extend our unbeaten league run.”

Golden Arrows’ last home victory over Sundowns came in the 2019/20 season under their current coach, Steve Komphela, who was also in charge during that encounter.
