“Tested Us As A Group”: Monyane Demands Strong Response From Amakhosi Against Ex-Coach
Kaizer Chiefs defender Thabiso Monyane says their MTN8 disappointment has served as a wake-up call as they prepare for a demanding season ahead.
Amakhosi suffered a disappointing defeat to Golden Arrows in their MTN8 quarter-final clash on Sunday, bringing their campaign in the competition to an early end.
While the result was a setback for the Soweto giants, Monyane believes the disappointment allowed the team to identify areas that need improvement as they prepare for a busy campaign.
“Of course, all eyes are on Sekhukhune for this midweek game,” he said.
“The MTN8 result definitely tested us as a group. We’ve used that as fuel.
“It showed us where we need to work, how we need to sharpen ourselves, and I think it’s a wake-up call for all of us.”
Chiefs will have little time to dwell on their MTN8 exit, with several competitions still awaiting them this season.
Amakhosi are competing in the Betway Premiership, CAF Confederation Cup, Carling Knockout and Nedbank Cup, giving the club several opportunities to challenge for silverware.
Their league campaign has already begun on a positive note, with Chiefs opening their Betway Premiership season with a victory over newly promoted Kruger United on 1 August.
Amakhosi now turn their attention to their second league encounter, with Sekhukhune United standing between them and another opportunity to collect maximum points.
Sekhukhune, coached by former Chiefs coach Cedric Kaze, are expected to provide a stern test when the two sides meet at FNB Stadium on Wednesday.
Monyane acknowledged the qualities of Babina Noko and expects a difficult encounter, but believes Chiefs are ready to give everything in their attempt to secure a positive result.
“And the preparation for Sekhukhune—I mean, you know it’s a tough team, a hard-running, organised side,” he added.
“So it’s going to be a tough encounter. But I trust the boys to do the work, and for sure, we’re going to go for it all.
“And yes, we know Mamelodi Sundowns are looming in the background, but right now, it’s one game at a time. Sekhukhune has our full attention, and we’re going there to get the result.”
With the MTN8 now behind them, Chiefs will need to maintain their focus as they prepare for a season that could see them competing across multiple fronts.
