“Starving Amakhosi”: Pitso Reveals How Arrows Stunned Chiefs At FNB Stadium
Golden Arrows head coach Pitso Dladla revealed that starving Kaizer Chiefs of possession for extended periods was the tactical key to upsetting the Glamour Boys over the weekend.
Abafana Bes’thende caused a major upset by leaving Chiefs stunned on home turf, securing a hard-fought 1–0 victory in the MTN8 quarter-final at FNB Stadium on Sunday.
Khulekani Shezi scored the match-winner at the Calabash after exchanging neat passes with Philani Khumalo. Shezi caught Amakhosi goalkeeper Brandon Petersen off guard—Petersen anticipated a cross into the box before Shezi cleverly caught him out at his near post.
Arrows, who famously won this competition in 2009 with a record-breaking final victory over Cape Town Spurs at Orlando Stadium, advance to face Mamelodi Sundowns in a two-legged semi-final tie.
“We came here knowing very well that it was not going to be an easy game,” said Dladla.
“However, we knew that if we kept the ball for long spells, we stood a great chance of frustrating them while looking to progress through intelligent possession—something we initially struggled to do in the first half.
“Our ball rotation was good, but technical errors let us down early on. In the second half, we instructed the team to play on the front foot, and we got the goal at the right time. From there, we sat a little deeper. While that wasn’t the original plan, our reinforced defense dealt brilliantly with the high balls into the box. I thought we executed the game plan very well as a collective.”
Dladla, who guided Durban City to a historic Nedbank Cup triumph last season, will now look to add the MTN8 trophy to his cabinet. During his stint at City, Dladla built a reputation for organizing resilient, compact teams—a defensive structure Chiefs failed to breach on Sunday.
However, Sundowns present a far stern challenge in the last four, given their ability to break down opposition structures through fluid positional play.
High on confidence, Arrows next turn their attention to the league as they visit Durban City at Chatsworth Stadium on Wednesday, setting up a prompt reunion between Dladla and his former club.
“I am delighted for the players because they showed immense confidence,” Dladla added. “If you watch our training sessions, that is exactly how we prepare. The new players brought into the squad are technically gifted, which allows us to play to our core strengths.”
Dladla will also be able to call upon new signing Jonah Fabisch—whose unveiling by the club on Saturday was first broken by Sportswire.
