Toyota Stadium Cleared To Host Bafana vs. Nigeria
The South African Football Association (SAFA) has confirmed that Toyota Stadium in Bloemfontein has been approved to host Bafana Bafana’s upcoming FIFA World Cup qualifier against Nigeria on Tuesday.
This approval comes after concerns about the pitch’s condition, which led to the Bafana Bafana vs. Lesotho match on Friday being moved to the Dr. Molemela Stadium, also in Bloemfontein.
The pitch at Toyota Stadium appeared sandy and worn during the COSAFA Cup in June, and its state was worsened after a rugby match was played there between Toyota Cheetahs and Suzuki Griquas last Friday.
Despite these issues, SAFA released a statement on Tuesday confirming the venue’s approval. “The highly anticipated 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier between Bafana Bafana and Nigeria will go ahead at the Free State Stadium in Bloemfontein as originally planned, following a recent physical inspection of the pitch,” the statement read.
Both FIFA and the Confederation of African Football (CAF) jointly confirmed the venue’s approval in a communication to SAFA CEO Lydia Monyepao. They cited “encouraging progress observed on the pitch” as the reason for their decision.
With the venue now confirmed, attention shifts to the players. Bafana Bafana are currently in camp in Johannesburg, preparing for two crucial qualifying matches that could determine their fate in the FIFA World Cup campaign.
