Nabi: We Still Need To Develop

Kaizer Chiefs coach Nasreddine Nabi says that despite the team’s strong start to the season, they still need to develop further.

Chiefs are currently joint-top of the Betway Premiership table with 13 points from five matches, level with leaders Sekhukhune United, who hold the top spot on goal difference.

The Amakhosi maintained their position by narrowly beating Golden Arrows at the Moses Mabhida Stadium on Sunday in a dominant performance that kept Arrows on the back foot for most of the game.

Chiefs’ pressure paid off when Nabi made three substitutions on the hour mark. Two of the sub players combined to score the winning goal. Gaston Sirino played a reverse pass to debutant Flavio Da Silva, who wasted no time in poking the ball into the empty net.

Impressively, this marks the first time in the club’s PSL history that they have not conceded a single goal in their first five matches.

However, Nabi warned that the team is not yet where he wants them to be and emphasized the need for continued development to become a more resilient squad.

“You don’t like it when I speak about the process, but it’s a reality for this team,” said Nabi.

“I didn’t promise to win a trophy or make a comeback in the first season, but it’s a process with a methodology we are working on.”

He continued, “I think winning the Nedbank Cup last season gave us a little confidence. We are in a good place this season, the results are here, but we still have a lot of work to do to keep progressing. We are happy with the results, but we still need to work more on our game model. We need to see Kaizer Chiefs not struggling against any team. We must control all the games we play and win each one with great football.”

Following the FIFA international break, the Amakhosi will face Eric Tinkler’s Sekhukhune in a top-of-the-table clash at FNB Stadium on 16 September [19:30].
