Williams Praises Mbokazi As Generational Talent

Bafana Bafana captain Ronwen Williams has lauded rising defensive star Mbekezeli Mbokazi as a “generational talent” ahead of South Africa’s high-stakes FIFA World Cup Group A clash against Czechia tonight at Atlanta Stadium.

Mbokazi has enjoyed a meteoric rise since bursting onto the senior stage with Orlando Pirates in March 2025. Within three months of his Buccaneers debut, the powerhouse defender earned his maiden Bafana Bafana call-up, rapidly transforming into an indispensable anchor in Hugo Broos’s defensive unit.

The youngster’s trajectory has been nothing short of extraordinary. After anchoring the Buccaneers’ backline, Mbokazi announced himself to the continent at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco, delivering a masterclass in modern defending. His stellar performances catalyzed a major transfer to Major League Soccer (MLS) side Chicago Fire.

Ahead of the World Cup, the center-back generated global headlines by storming into the MLS All-Star First XI alongside icon Lionel Messi, Son Heung-min, and Chicago teammate Hugo Cuypers.

In a staggering show of his exploding popularity, Mbokazi actually topped the fan voting charts, finishing ahead of Messi.

Speaking ahead of the crucial match against Czechia, skipper Ronwen Williams emphasized how Mbokazi’s vocal presence and South Africa’s unique linguistic diversity have fortified Bafana’s backline.

“Yeah, I mean, as a team, we know each other’s strengths and weaknesses, and we are blessed with so many languages. Most of us can speak different languages in our country,” said Williams.

“So, we have good communication, and we know how important that is on the field. And not only between myself and Mbokazi, but throughout the entire team. I’m the leader and captain of the team, and I’m probably the most vocal player.

“So, we have a good understanding at the back. There are so many languages that we speak on the field, and I think, at this moment, it helps us because the other teams obviously don’t understand us.

“And for us to have him on our side, he’s been amazing. He’s a generational talent and has been outstanding for us, even in the opening game. His aggression at such a young age is incredible.

“He inspires all of us to keep fighting and to keep going. Just when you think the guys have given up, you see a young Mbokazi stepping up and pushing us, especially in the final minutes. He’s a born leader, a born defender, and he inspires us as a team.”

Head coach Hugo Broos echoed his captain’s glowing sentiments, mapping out a world-class trajectory for the young star while assessing his physical profile.

“I am happy with the way he continues to progress,” said Broos.

“I saw him playing his first games for Pirates in South Africa, and immediately I could see that he had a lot of talent. But what is also very important is that he is a powerful player.

“In modern football, it is not enough to be technically gifted or simply a good player; you need power. When I watch matches here at the World Cup, you can see that every game is about power and every team has physical strength.

“I think Mbokazi is really the model of a modern player. He still has a lot to learn because he is young, but as Ronwen said, he is a player who communicates a lot on the pitch, and he will become an even bigger leader in the future.

“I was a little frustrated when he moved to America because I believe he is capable of playing in Europe. The challenges there would be much greater and would help him develop more quickly into a top player.

“But perhaps it is also a good thing that he can take an intermediate step instead of going straight to the highest level. I’m sure that if he understands what he needs to do and avoids the things he shouldn’t do, he will become a great player.”
