Zamalek Beat Tau’s Ahly To Win CAF Super Cup
Zamalek has been crowned CAF Super Cup champions after defeating rivals Al Ahly in a penalty shootout. The match, played in Saudi Arabia’s Kingdom Arena in Riyadh, ended 1-1 after 90 minutes on Friday night.
The game went straight to penalties, where Zamalek converted four of their attempts while Al Ahly missed two to lose 4-3. The Egyptian derby was a tense affair, with Zamalek players protesting a penalty awarded to Al Ahly.
Bafana Bafana vice-captain Percy Tau started for Al Ahly despite uncertainty about his future with the club. Tau played well, combining effectively with his teammates on the right side. However, he was visibly upset when he was substituted in the 66th minute.
Al Ahly, eight-time Super Cup champions, took the lead in the 44th minute through a penalty converted by Abou Ali. Zamalek equalized in the 77th minute through substitute Nasser Mansy.
The match went to penalties, and Zamalek emerged victorious. This is Zamalek’s fifth Super Cup title and their first since 2020. They have also won five CAF Champions League titles and 28 Egyptian Premier League titles. Al Ahly, the most successful club on the continent, has won 12 Champions League titles and 44 Egyptian League titles.
